Five New Fully Electric Battery Ferries Of MM Design Ordered

Five new fully electric ferries of MM design have been ordered during the two first months of 2018, consolidating Multi Maritime’s position as the leading developer of innovative and green ship design. Multi Maritime’s strong position has been achieved by creating the best and most energy efficient solutions, resulting in satisfied and returning customers. With the last contracts, Multi Maritime’s contribution to Norway’s green ferry revolution has resulted in 20 battery and plug-in hybrid ferries of MM design in order or recently delivered.

Being independent gives Multi Maritime the opportunity to use and integrate equipment from a wide range of suppliers, system integrators and battery types, as well working closely with a variety of shipyards both in Norway and internationally.

Development continues with the five new orders, and considerable resources are put into developing the best and most energy efficient solutions. All five ferries will normally be operated all electric, but they will also be arranged with biodiesel generators as back-up.

Four of the ferries have been ordered by Fjord1 ASA, of which three of the ferries will be of the new “MM82FE EL” design, which is approx. 85 m long. The capacity will be 83 cars and 299 passengers (incl. crew). The ferries will operate all electric on challenging routes. Two will operate at “Ranavik-Skjersholmane”, which is a 14.2 km long route and a service speed of approx. 13 knots. The expected charging power is up to 5000 kW. The third ferry will operate at Gjermundshamn-Årsnes. The three ferries will be built at Sefine Shipyard in Turkey (new buildings 33, 34 & 35) and delivered in Q3 and Q4 2019.

The fourth ferry for Fjord1 is 116 m long and of “MM111FE EL” design. The vessel is planned to operate at Jondal-Tørvikbygd from 01.01.2020. The capacity will be 130 cars and 299 passengers (incl. crew). The ferry will be built by Tersan Shipyard in Turkey (new building 1079) and scheduled delivery is Q2 2019.

The fifth ferry, of “MM70FE EL” design, has been ordered by Boreal Sjø AS and will be built by Vard Brevik in Norway (new building 903). The ferry is approx. 75 m long and will have the capacity for 60 cars and 199 passengers (incl. crew). The ferry will operate at Kvanndal-Utne.
