Chemical tanker MT Minera Virgo was attacked and boarded by a group of pirates while underway some 45 nautical miles off South Cotonou, Benin in the Gulf of Guinea yesterday.
According to Dryad Global, the vessel was boarded by 5-6 individuals and unconfirmed reports states that majority of the crew have reached the citadel with one person still unaccounted for.
The ship was reportedly heading to Lagos, Nigeria from the Netherlands with 22 crew members when the incident took place.
Some reports from Greece suggests that one crew member was captured by the pirates, however there is no confirmation on the same.
The 2006 built 51000 dwt product tanker is owned by Greek owner Minerva Marine .
This is the third boarding incident reported in the waters off Benin in 2020.
