Recently there was a fire onboard the containership Maersk Elba while it was en route to Felixstowe from the Suez Canal. This has put a question on the ship’s voyage. Keeping this in mind, the shipping giant Maersk has informed MSC about the incident.
As of December 31, the ship is under towage in Algeciras Spain where the vessel will undergo repairs before continuing its journey to Europe.
The 13,092 TEU ship had lost power after the engine room caught on fire while the vessel was en route to the UK from Sri Lanka back on December 26.
The fire was extinguished by the crew itself and authorities were informed subsequently, following which the ship was towed to Shared for further inspection and repair.
Portuguese National Maritime Authority (AMN) has said that two tugs are towing the 2011-built boxship while a navy patrol ship NRP is accompanying it to oversee the matter till it leaves the jurisdiction of the country.
“As a result of the work carried out to restore the ship’s propulsion and repair other systems affected by the fire, it was concluded that the safety conditions were not met for the ship to sail by its own means,” AMN informed. AMN further highlighted that experts and the shipowner himself decided against moving it unguarded that’s why the ship was transferred to Algeciras for repairing
Maersk informed this to MSC as the containership MAERSK ELBA is carrying MSC’s cargo which is meant for the customers of MSC. Hence, any delay in the journey will affect MSX. The ship is carrying this cargo as part of MSC’s Shogun-Pearl service.
MSC has said that they regret the inconvenience caused because of the incident and are in touch with the concerned customers
“We will do the utmost to assist MSC customers to ensure the matter is handled as efficiently and smoothly as possible”, said Maersk.
MSC has advised all to contact their representatives for queries to this matter while they will keep them updated about the latest information from the ship.
