Few Of World’s Greenest Electric & LNG Tug Boats To Be Propelled By Schottel

SCHOTTEL will deliver a total of ten rudder propellers and two transverse thrusters to the Turkish shipyard Sanmar Shipyards. These are installed in two LNG-powered escort tugs and three battery-operated harbour tugs.

The ships, commissioned by the Canadian HaiSea Marine, a partnership between the Haisla Nation and Seaspan ULC, will provide assistance and towing services for LNG tankers docking at the new LNG export station in Kitimat, British Columbia. All five tugs are scheduled to go into operation in 2023.

The fleet will consist of two RAstar 4000-DF dual-fuel (LNG and diesel) escort tugs and three ElectRA 2800 electric harbor tugs. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., the LNG tugs are built at the Sanmar shipyard in Altinova, while the electric tugs are built at the Sanmar shipyard in Tuzla.

RAstar 4000-DF: two SRP 610 CP and one STT 170

Each of the two dual-fuel escort tugs is equipped with two SCHOTTEL rudder propellers type SRP 610 CP with an input power of 3,000 kW and a propeller diameter of 3.2 m. To further improve maneuverability, a SCHOTTEL TransverseThruster type STT 170 (250 kW) will be installed in every ship.

With a length of 40 m and a bollard pull of around 100 t, they will be the most powerful escort tugs on the Canadian west coast. They also have an exhaust after treatment system that meets the requirements of the IMO Tier III emissions standard.

ElectRA 2800: two SCD 460

Each of the three battery-operated electric tugs is powered by two SCHOTTEL CombiDrive Type SCD 460 (2,100 kW each) with four-bladed propellers with a diameter of 2.6 m. With this drive configuration you can achieve a bollard pull of approx. 70 t.

The ElectRA 2800 port tugs will be used together at the new LNG export facility and will be the first battery-powered electric tugs in their class. They are designed in such a way that they perform their regular tasks when putting on and taking off with the help of battery power with a capacity of around 5,240 kWh. The ElectRA 2800 port tugs will be 28 meters in length.

Almost zero emissions

Since there is sufficient clean electricity from hydropower available in Kitimat, the port tugs can be charged at their berths between the berthing processes using special shore charging stations, which leads to almost zero emissions in battery operation. The greenhouse gas emissions of the new tugs are expected to be significantly lower (54% and 24% respectively) than with diesel-powered alternatives.
