Three members of the cargo vessel crew named Simba jumped off the outbound vessel into the St. Johns River at Mayport on Wednesday morning, per the Customs and Border Protection.
The Coast Guard informed News4JAX that two men jumped overboard.
Witnesses called 911, reporting swimmers in distress in the river that is known for its swift currents.
One of the people swam to shore on Heckscher Drive near the Fort George Island Marina. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department rushed him to a hospital for observation. The man is going to be interviewed, per CBP.
A second man is assumed to have made it to the shore someplace. News4JAX was informed that he is being searched by the CBP and Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
At last check, the whereabouts of the second and third men are unknown.
The Simba dropped its anchor after the three had gone overboard and stayed in the river in Mayport on Wednesday around afternoon.
