Viking Takes Delivery Of The Newest Ocean Vessel

Viking® announced that it had taken delivery of the firm’s newest ocean vessel, the Viking Neptune®. A ceremony was held to celebrate the delivery when the ship was presented at Fincantieri’s shipyard, based in Italy’s Ancona.

The Viking Neptune is reportedly equipped with a hydrogen fuel system, securing its position as the first vessel in the cruise industry to test the use of hydrogen power for operations on a ship. Viking is deploying the small system as a test to determine how hydrogen fuel can be utilized at an even larger scale in the firm’s future new builds.

Torstein Hagen, the Chairman of Viking, said they were proud to add the newest sister vessel to the ocean fleet, as it marks a significant advancement in hydrogen testing as a future fuel for boats. He said the firm looks forward to welcoming passengers on Viking Neptune next week. This vessel is the 15th new one to be added to the overall fleet in 2022, another major milestone as the celebration of the company’s 25th anniversary progresses.

The Viking Neptune will spend the initial and inaugural season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean before it sets sail on the firm’s Viking World Cruise, which is a journey to London from Fort Lauderdale, spanning 138 days, 57 ports, and 28 countries. It will involve overnight stays across 11 cities.

Neptune comes as Viking marks its 25th anniversary in 2022. Viking Expeditions was introduced in January 2022 with the Viking Octantis®; her sister vessel, the Viking Polaris®, made a debut in September 2022. Earlier in the year, the firm reportedly launched eight new Viking Longships® on European rivers, next-gen purpose-built vessels for the Nile, Mississippi, and Mekong Rivers, and another new ocean vessel named the Viking Mars®.

The Viking Neptune is the newest addition to Viking’s famous, award-winning ocean fleet of identical sister vessels. Classified as “small ships” by Cruise Critic, the firm’s ocean vessels reportedly have a gross tonnage of about 47,800 tons.

These boast 465 staterooms capable of hosting 930 passengers; the vessels feature veranda staterooms, light-filled public zones, Scandinavian design, and several options for al fresco dining.
