In a recent update, Iran has declared its acquisition of a legal order to seize a tanker in the Gulf following a collision with an Iranian ship. The collision occurred just a day before this announcement. Notably, the tanker is one of the two vessels the U.S. Navy had previously prevented Iran from taking control of.
As the official IRINN news agency reported, a collision occurred between the Richmond Voyager, an oil tanker flying the flag of the Bahamas, and an Iranian vessel. The Maritime Search and Rescue Center of Hormozgan Province in Iran verified the collision and stated that five individuals were injured and the Iranian vessel experienced flooding. Subsequently, the Iranian navy obtained a court order to confiscate the Richmond Voyager.
In response to a distress call from the Richmond Voyager, located in international waters near the coast of Oman, the U.S. Navy swiftly dispatched the USS McFaul, a guided-missile destroyer. The U.S. Navy confirmed that Iranian authorities had fired shots and demanded the tanker stop. However, upon the arrival of the USS McFaul, the Iranian vessel departed the area.
On July 5, U.S. forces prevented two attempted commercial tanker seizures by the Iranian Navy after the Iranians had opened fire in one of the incidents near the coast of Oman. Both of these incidents occurred in international waters. Read more

Chevron, the U.S. oil company responsible for managing the Richmond Voyager, has verified the safety of the crew members and affirmed that the vessel is operating without any issues. These assurances have alleviated concerns regarding significant damage or immediate threats to the crew’s well-being.
This recent incident is not an isolated occurrence, as the U.S. Navy has recently intervened in a similar situation involving the TRF Moss, an oil tanker flying the Marshall Islands flag, in the same region. The U.S. Navy has reported Iran’s seizure of two oil tankers within a week, slightly over a month ago, highlighting a worrisome trend of escalating tensions in the region.
These recent incidents occurred within a series of shipping attacks in the Gulf waters since 2019, during increased tensions between the United States and Iran. The significance of this region cannot be emphasized enough, as approximately one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and oil products transported by sea pass through the vital Strait of Hormuz. This critical chokepoint between Iran and Oman is a conduit for global seaborne supply, as highlighted by data from Vortexa, an analytics firm.
The repeated incidents and seizures serve as a stark reminder of the delicate and volatile nature of the situation in the Gulf waters. They call upon all parties to exercise caution and actively pursue diplomatic means to prevent further escalation. The international community closely monitors these developments, hoping for a peaceful resolution that ensures stability and the uninterrupted flow of crucial energy resources through this vital maritime route.
