Svitzer, a leading provider of harbour and terminal towage to the global shipping industry, has entered a yearlong agreement with Essar Oil UK to provide towage service related to the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port.
The double digit million-pound agreement is an extension of former contracts established as far back as 2002. Essar owns and operates the Stanlow refinery located on the south side of the Mersey Estuary near Liverpool. On an average, Svitzer tows three vessels related to Essar’s activities on a weekly basis.
Kasper Friis Nilaus, Managing Director, Svitzer Europe said: “We are committed to Liverpool and have served Essar on the Mersey for a very long time. With safe, timely, and reliable service, we are delighted to continue this great partnership paying close attention to Essar’s need to closely manage their supply chain.”
The need for timeliness, is underlined by the fact that Essar is one of the largest suppliers of fuel in the North-West England with customers including most of the major retailers together with Manchester Airport and the region’s trains and buses. This effectively means that many people rely on fuel produced by the Stanlow refinery and stress the need for a reliable supply of crude oil.
Mark Thompson, Marine Manager, Essar Oil UK said: “We are pleased to extend our contract with Svitzer. There is a great match in values since our companies share a solid and constant attention to safety. We operate in technically challenging environments that demands a highly skilled workforce committed to safe operations around the tankers delivering the cargo that keeps the North-West running.”
Apart from escorting tankers along the narrow and relatively shallow channel of the fast flowing River Mersey, Svitzer also provides standby and firefighting cover 24/7 365 days per year.
