A captain of an oil tanker ship was murdered by armed assailants off the coast of eastern Venezuela, Reuters reported.
Six armed men boarded tanker San Ramon in the early hours on Monday in the Pozuelos Bay and shot Colombian national captain Jamie Herrera Oranzco, Puerto La Cruz port authority reported.
A coast guard segment guarding the vessel was also injured in the attack.
Jone Bodas, the oil workers union leader in Puerto La Cruz, said to Reuters that the tanker had been on anchorage, waiting to enter the Jose oil terminal to load crude when the attack took place.
He also added that other members of the San Ramon’s crew were still missing.
Crime has been alarmingly increasing on Venezuela’s oil industry because of the ongoing economic crises as pirates and armed assailants are frequently robbing equipment from oil wells.
