Coronavirus: Delivery of World’s Largest Cruise Ship Delayed

The wonder of the Seas, which will supposedly be the largest cruise ship ever built, has experienced a delay in its delivery due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The ship, operated by Royal Caribbean, was presumed to be delivered in 2021. Currently, it is under construction in Saint-Nazaire, France. The ship was to reportedly be based out of Shanghai, China. 

With a capacity of 6,000 passengers, alongside 2,200 crewmembers, would be the largest cruise ship ever after it’s construction ends.

Previously, Royal Caribbean had declared that the vessel would apparently mark the ‘beginning of a new era of cruising’.

“Royal Caribbean is known for its innovation and constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible,” said Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley.

Investors in industry leader Royal Caribbean were told in May about the consequence of COVID-19 impacting on the company’s plans of building new ships,  possibly hinting at delivery delays from shipyards.

A company spokesperson could be heard saying, “Royal Caribbean had to delay the deployment of Wonder from China.”

Recently, Marine Insight had reported that the US government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) extending the  ‘No Sail’ order up until the end of September.

Similarly, Canada has consequently banned all cruise ships from Canadian ports till October 31.

Royal Caribbean is optimistic that they’ll begin sailing from October 1, with the company gearing up for the same.
