Watch: Fishing Vessel Caught Fire And Sank In Vigo; No Injuries Or Fuel Leakage Witnessed

The tasks of extinguishing the fire that occurred on board the vessel, Baffin Bay, docked at the Bouzas Repair Pier, extended throughout the entire day on December 3rd and well into the morning of the next day. However, the Vigo Fire Department declared the fire extinguished around 2.30 a.m. on December 4th.

On the same day of the vessel catching fire, the department proceeded to place three anti-pollution containment barriers in the area, and on the next day, a fourth was to be extended. Maritime Rescue Personnel (SASEMAR) and the Port contingency-emergency service (SEGEM) have been assigned the charge of this installation.

However, over the last few hours, it has been found that there has been no leakage of diesel outside the confined perimeter. The ship maintains around 250 m³ of this fuel on board, so the technicians will now have to assess how to proceed with its extraction. To do this, a team of divers has traveled to the area to inspect the condition of the ship, after which it can be removed in a totally safe way.

Those in charge of the Vigo Port Authority, the Maritime Captaincy, and the ship’s owner company are currently studying the operation to be carried out for the extraction, after which the ship will be refloated. However, it is a process that will not be easy or fast.

Once the technicians have decided the most suitable way to proceed with the extraction of diesel, it could be carried out throughout the day today, while the refloating of the sunken ship would last for the next few days.
