The families of the Indian seafarers stranded onboard the Suez Canal grounded ship Ever Given are in dire condition as their chief earning member can’t support them.
The 25 Indian seafarers are presently detained along with the ship over compensation issues. The canal authorities have demanded 1$ billion in compensation from the Japanese shipping company Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd. which owns the ship.
This got lodged on the size canal on 23rd March and was refloated after 6 days of tiring work by the canal authorities and the salvage team on 29th March. From then, it is anchored at the Great Bitter Lake outside the canal as the investigation to determine the cause of grounding continues.

Amidst this, the Canal Authorities have seized the ship and the crew, making it clear that they will be released only after the compensation is paid. Now, concerns about these seafarers’ families are mounting.
“The prospect of seafarers being stuck gives us grave concern”, said the Secretary-General of ITF, Stephen Cotton.
The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) chairman Osama Rabie has said “We hope for a speedy agreement. The minute they agree to compensation, the vessel will be allowed to move.”
