Asymptomatic COVID-19 Ningbo-Zhoushan Port Worker Possibly Infected By Crew Members

The Ningbo port worker who tested positive for Covid-19 has been asymptomatic in Zhejiang Province (East China) has no connection with the most recent wave of cases rising in the country. Zhejiang authorities have reportedly stated this following epidemiological investigation and viral gene sequencing.

The authorities have reportedly said that the virus gene sequence in Ningbo’s case and the latest wave of Delta variant in domestic cities like East China’s Nanjing are from varied sources.

The 34-year-old patient who was employed at a container shipping enterprise at the Ningbo port, the world’s largest in terms of annual throughputs, had not been abroad or visited medium or high-risk areas in two weeks before he had tested positive on 11 August.

The patient, nicknamed Yu, had worked with a foreign cargo ship on 4 to 5 August, when the ship had been docked in Vladivostok, Russia, from 27 to 29 July. Out of 18 crew members, 11 had tested positive for Covid-19. This suggests the possibility that Yu may have been infected when he came in contact with goods or cargo crew members who had been carrying the deadly virus.

As of Tuesday, more than 120,000 residents in Ningbo’s Beilun district, where Yu stays, have undergone nucleic tests thrice. The local authorities have said that fortunately, all of them tested negative.

All entertainment venues, internet cafes, performance halls, bars, cinemas, gyms, bath and foot massage centres, and religious places in that district have been temporarily shut down.
