Watch: India Welcomes First Of Four Survey Ships To Advance Maritime Research And Mapping

To advance the country’s maritime competence in terms of research and mapping, the first in the much-awaited series comprising four survey vessels was launched on Sunday in the country’s city of joy, Kolkata.

Titled Sandhayak, the vessel has been built under the Survey Vessel project for the Indian Navy by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd or GRSE.

Ajay Bhatt, the Ministry of State for Defense, said that the launch of ‘Sandhayak’, the survey vessel, reinforces the nation’s commitment to indigenous shipbuilding as part of ‘Make in India’. He added that it emphasizes the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ or hopes for a self-reliant country.

The vessel has more than 80% indigenous content by cost and this makes sure that large-scale defense production is carried out by manufacturing units in India, generating employment and expertise in the country.

The vessel was inaugurated by Pushpa, Bhatt’s wife, the ceremony’s chief guest.

The vessel can conduct a full-scale deep-water and coastal hydrographic survey of harbor and port approaches, and navigational routes. It can also survey maritime limits and collect geographical and oceanographic data needed in defense applications.
