Sweden has requested assistance from Norway to fight a fire that began on a cargo vessel that was transporting timber off the west coast of Sweden as it is running the risk of spreading, authorities reported.
So far, severe weather conditions had gone against the efforts of putting out the fire. The Swedish coast guard said that it was hoping to tow Almirante Storni to calm conditions, or to a port.
There was no risk of the oil spill as fuel tanks have not been affected yet, the spokesperson mentioned. The fire has not spread to the ship but the heat is spreading via the cargo, raising the chances of fire gaining strength.
On Wednesday, he added that Norway would be providing assistance to Swedish authorities to put out the fire, which raged even on the fifth day.
So far, no instances of fire-related injuries have been reported. Almirante Storni, which sails with a Liberian flag and is loaded with 600 tonnes of fuel, is still anchored in Gothenburg. The crew comprising 17 individuals has not yet been evacuated.
