Pirates have reportedly launched an attack on a container vessel sailing near the Equatorial Guinea coast. They have also taken six members of the crew hostage. The report came through from Dryad Global, a Maritime Security Company, on Monday.
The incident took place in the Gulf of Guinea toward the southwest of the Luba port. Per estimates, the recent attack is the 10th abduction that took place in the region this year. The total number of abducted members recorded so far is 76.
The Gulf of Guinea is notoriously one of the most treacherous areas for navigation. According to the International Maritime Bureau, 130 of 135 crew abductions have happened in the Gulf of Guinea.
The rise in piracy rate is claimed to be brought about by economic and political unreliability, youth unemployment, and impoverishment of the region, via which essential maritime routes cross.
