A container vessel, 1,049 TEU Asiatic Sun, sustained extensive damage on crashing into a wharf. The accident took place at Taichung Port Sunday, 26 December.
Taichung Port authorities have narrated how the vessel crashed into the port Pier 8A at 7:33 am while docking. The Singapore-flagged Asiatic Sun is about 143 meters long weighing 9,610 tons. It was constructed in 2008 in Korea.
An investigation has also been launched by the Maritime Port Bureau of the Ministry of Transport and Communications regarding the case. Assumptions are that rough winds had caused the accident.
The Asiatic Sun’s bow appears to be impaired after it rammed the wharf. Any other kind of damage to the vessel has not been reported. No crew members on the Asiatic Sun have been injured. There are reportedly no signs of oil leakage or pollution yet.
All 584 onboard containers of the Asiatic Sun were offloaded at Pier 11.
