A Greece-based diver and his team have found the wreck of a submarine eight decades after it had been sunk in the Aegean Sea by the Allied Forces. The time of this wreck dates back to when World War II was raging.
The Italian submarine named Jantina with nearly 48 sailors on it had set sail from the island of Leros with. It eventually sank on 5 July 1941 on being hit by torpedoes fired by HMS Torbay, a British submarine.
Kostas Thoctarides, one of Greece’s most reputed maritime specialists and divers, discovered her along with his team. She was south of the island of Mykonos at about 103 meters. The discovery was possible with an underwater vehicle titled the ROV Super Achilles, which carried out a thorough visual examination of the whole wreckage.
Thoctarides said that naval history resembles a puzzle, and this discovery is a part of the larger puzzle. He added that two submarines confronting one another is a rare event. He also mentioned that Jantina’s identity could be verified from records sourced from Naval History Office in Italy. Hers is the fourth naval submarine identified and located by the expert and his team.
