Cargo Vessel And Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker Collide Near Port Of Quebec

A Canadian Coast Guard and a freighter icebreaker collided and the incident hampered maritime traffic at the St. Lawrence River, near Quebec Port. The bulk carrier named ‘Federal Crimson’ collided with the stern of CCGS Pierre Radisson, an icebreaker, close to Sainte-Foy.

The site of the accident is not very far from the two bridges that connect Quebec and the South Shore. It took place when the icebreaker was escorting the freighter in icy waters.

The hull of the icebreaker was impaired during the collision. The vessel has not been taking on water, per Marie-Ève ​​Caron who is the spokeswoman for the Canadian Coast Guard. No one, however, suffered injuries in the collision.

The Coast Guard vessel is currently anchored at St-Nicolas and is expected to arrive at the Port of Quebec for major repairs.

Des Groseilliers, yet another Coast Guard icebreaker, has also taken over from the Pierre Radisson. A third icebreaker that was called to act as reinforcement, the Martha L. Black, will head back to Trois- Rivers.

Transport Canada is going to investigate the accident.
