Container Vessel ‘Thorswind’ Runs Aground In Dubai; Successfully Refloated

The Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC) has been successful in floating a container vessel that was grounded on Thursday near Dubai’s Palm Deira when it was sailing from Port Khalid to Khalifa Port.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirati politician and the ED of the DMCA of the PCFC, said that the Authority received news of the grounding of the container vessel “THORSWIND” on Thursday morning. He further added that important meetings were set urgently with the authorities in both the private and public sectors with the aim of expediting the container vessel’s re-floating in collaboration with Port Rashid.

Sheikh Saeed also mentioned that the DMCA has gotten in touch with authorities and specific entities to ensure navigational safety of the marine environment. The Authority oversaw the whole procedure of re-floating “THORSWIND” without reporting leaks, injuries, or side effects on maritime traffic in Dubai waters.

The Executive Director of the DMCA mentioned that “THORSWIND”, the ship weighing more than 20,000 tons with a width of about 29.8 meters and a length of about 183.5 meters, was sailing to Khalifa Port located in Abu Dhabi from Port Khalid in Sharjah.

Sheikh Saeed was in praises of the prompt actions of the DMCA team and the specialized teams. These teams supervised the resolution from the time the container vessel was reported to be grounded until rescue teams re-floated it and resumed its voyage once again.

Sheikh Saeed mentioned the untiring efforts of the DMCA in dealing with navigational and marine accidents in emirate waters and the role of the Authority in enhancing Dubai’s position as a sustainable, safe, and secure maritime hub.
