Ransomware Attack Halts Container Terminal At JNPT

An unprecedented ransomware attack has blown India’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal’s (JNPCT’s) management information system (MIS). JNPCT is one of the top five marine facilities in Nhava Sheva, India’s prime container gateway of JNPT.

The ransomware attack was first spotted yesterday and, per sources, the port’s authority has been trying hard toward restoring the crucial operating systems. The information system at JNPCT has not been operational since Monday owing to which a call was taken to divert a vessel.

The situation has compelled the JNPCT to divert vessels to other terminals at the port located close to Mumbai. JNPCT, the oldest terminal in the public harbour, is managed and supervised by the landlord port, while the remaining are reportedly licensed to some private concessionaires, such as the APM Terminals and DP World, especially following a build-operate-transfer pattern.

The MIS personnel are currently working, and based on their recommendations further calls will be taken to divert more vessels if required. There are, however, no reports on how much more time it might take to have the system restored.

A source from the shipping industry mentioned that the system is nonoperational, and JNPCT is unsure when it may be successfully restored. It will take at least 3-4 days.

JNPCT was put up for privatization by the port authority as part of the Indian government’s National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP). As a result, capacity utilization declined from more than 100% in FY17 to less than 50%.
