Car Carrier Grounds Off Russian Town After Experiencing Hull Breach In The Black Sea

A 142 m, Cameroon-flagged car carrier dubbed Lider Bulut was reportedly grounded in the Black Sea off the coast of a Russian town named Tuapse. This happened after it developed a starboard list over the weekend owing to a hull breach, which caused flooding of its engine room.

Per Russian media that cited the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot), the examination that had been conducted after the vessel was purposely grounded to prevent it from capsizing, discovered multiple holes in the hull. The cause is yet to be reported.

On Sunday, 18 June, the crew members reported the incident and asked for help from the Tuapse port when the ship tilted over 10 degrees. Russian authorities immediately dispatched rescue vessels to secure the area. However, there are no oil spills and casualties yet. The 28 crew members, including Georgian and Turkish nationals, are safe.

The 2000-built ship was sailing to Novorossiysk from Samsun in Turkey. It was transporting vegetables and fruits. Initial reports mentioned a malfunction in the vessel’s ballast system. Repair work is going on to stabilize Lider Bulut and tow it to the Tuapse port.

Eyewitnesses have posted images to social media platforms showing the Lider Bulut with a significant list on its starboard.
