Thames Welcomes The Götheborg – The Largest Wooden-Sailing Vessel In The World

A massive pirate ship-esque vessel was observed to be smoothly sliding through the Tower Bridge on Monday morning (8 August). The vessel was the Götheborg, sailing through London en route to Asia.

It took social media platforms by storm, where tourists and workers paused for a moment to take a shot of the pristine transition of the huge vessel from one side of the bridge to the other.

The Götheborg of Sweden is the largest ship in the world to sail on the oceans. It reportedly visited London back in 2007. It’ll be docked in Canary Wharf’s Quay Dock. It will be open to visits from 8 to 11 August.

The gorgeous ship replicates an 18th-century East Indiaman that reportedly sank in 1745 outside Gothenburg.

Press material reports that following in the historic footsteps of the original vessel from the 18th century, this expedition aims to enhance and nurture trade relations in Asia and Europe. The ship will sail through Europe in 2022, stay in the Mediterranean in the winter this year, and sail for Asia in March next year. In September 2023, the ship is going to reach the expedition’s final destination, which is Shanghai.

Götheborg’s construction started in 1995. It was launched in 2003. The vessel, however, embarked on its first trip to Asia from Europe in 2005.
