A crew member is an unnamed man from Brazil. He lost his life shortly after the Wonder of the Seas reportedly set sail for the Caribbean from Port Canaveral in Florida on 13 November, Crew Center stated.
Per the mention on the official website, a source said that the man, who was employed as a galley steward, committed suicide and also left a note with a video on social media.
The crew member passed away after he requested to return home owing to personal problems at home. The request was denied, per Crew Center.
The death has naturally raised pertinent questions regarding why cruise lines do not yet have mental health counsellors on ships.
Crew Center mentioned that the crew member’s death “is yet another unfortunate reminder that mental health specialists are needed to support crew members and communicate their fears, concerns, and challenges with each other.
The mental well-being and health of the crew members need to be the primary focus among relevant members of the shipboard management too.
The vessel’s closed-circuit camera captured the person jumping into the sea.
There were 623 reported deaths on cruise ship lines from 2000 to 2019—89% of these were passenger deaths, per a 2020 study reportedly published by the International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health.
Suicides and murders make up about 29% of crew deaths, the study revealed.
