Expansions At Prince Rupert’s Shore Power System To Lower Down Emissions By 30,000 Tons

Expansions at the Port of Prince Rupert’s shore power system will permit more vessels to power down when docked, bringing down the emissions by nearly 30,000 tons.

New electrical infrastructural elements at the Fairview Container Terminal of DP World will extend the system to cover the south and north berths.

This will permit the substantial container vessels at the berth to plug into shore power and shut down the primary generators while the cargo is unloaded and loaded.

By doing this, the ships can lower the number of exhaust emissions generated, reducing the port’s carbon footprint.

DP World’s Prince Rupert Port Authority and BC Hydro partnership provided about $5.4 million toward the assignment.

Cumulatively, the north berth expansion and upgrade to the south berth cost nearly $7.6 million, with Ottawa offering the difference.
