US Navy Takes Delivery Of First Upgraded E-6B Doomsday Aircraft

The U.S. Navy recently received its first modernized and unique Northrop Grumman E-6B aircraft, typically called the “Doomsday” plane.

The “Mercury” aircraft forms the backbone of communication between the country’s nuclear submarine fleet and the President.

The delivery is a crucial component of a broader contract worth $111 million to Northrop Grumman, aimed at establishing the long-term and sustainable operational effectiveness of the aircraft.

Following the departure from the firm’s Louisiana facility, the aircraft was transported to the Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, where it will be stationed.

Northrop Grumman mentioned that the E-6B reportedly underwent the integration of five brand-new kits, enhancing commands, controls, and communications systems.

The upgrade is likely to reinforce the nuclear deterrence capabilities of the US Navy and also maintain a crucial connection between the nation’s nuclear arsenal and the President, facilitating readiness in case of attacks.

Per a statement from the Naval Air Systems Command, the agency responsible for aircraft procurement, the major modifications to the E-6B aircraft were conducted in 2022, and the plane was successfully delivered this month.

The service explained that the $111 million contract offers six significant modifications — referred to as Block II — to enhance the aircraft’s command, control, and communications functions connecting the National Command Authority with the U.S. strategic and non-strategic forces.

In a statement, Northrop Grumman confirmed that the second aircraft slated for upgrades had reached the facility at Lake Charles as planned, and the modernization work has reportedly commenced.
