South Korea’s First Offshore Wind Installation Vessel Launched

On Tuesday, Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries introduced the premier wind installation vessel (offshore) in South Korea, the Hyundai Frontier. The new vessel, part of South Korea’s national assignment, marks a breakthrough in the renewable energy domain of the country.

The wind installation vessel’s length is 85 meters. It is 6.5 meters in terms of height and 41 meters in terms of width. It is well-equipped to lift, transport, and install offshore wind turbines in a single operation.

Key features of the 14,000-ton vessel include a dynamic positioning system for maintaining accurate positioning in sea conditions and a jacking system that aids in lifting and stabilizing the vessel’s hull above the water.

These permit the vessel to function across seabed terrains. Besides, an integrated vessel crane with a capacity of 1,200 tons enables the installation of high-performance turbines of up to almost 10 megawatts.

Post the launch; the vessel is all geared up to start turbine installation at Jeju Hanlim Offshore Wind Power Plant. Spearheaded by Hyundai Engineering & Construction, the offshore wind power complex boasts a robust approach to energy production, encompassing equity investment, business development, project financing procurement, design, construction, and procurement.

Currently, Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries and Hyundai Engineering & Construction are mainly for the primary project processes, including installing and fabricating substructures, undersea cables, and upper turbines.
