Japan-India Maritime Exercise Aimed At Expanding Military Cooperation Starts In Vizag

The Japanese and Indian navies on Wednesday started a six-day joint maritime exercise off Visakhapatnam to expand their military cooperation.

India’s Navy has been hosting the seventh edition of the Japan-India Maritime Exercise (abbreviated JIMEX), which marks the eleventh anniversary of the wargame since its inception in 2012.

India’s Navy has reportedly deployed the country’s first-ever indigenous guided missile destroyer dubbed INS Delhi, and the indigenously built anti-submarine warfare corvette titled INS Kamorta, fleet tanker dubbed INS Shakti, a sub, maritime patrol aircraft P8I, shipborne helicopters, and fighter aircraft for the exercise, per the officials.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (also known as JMSDF) is represented by the guided missile destroyer dubbed the JS Samidare and the integral helicopters. The exercise will be carried out over six days in two distinct phases — a harbour phase followed by advanced warfighting skills at sea.

The JIMEX 23 offers an opportunity to know each other’s leading practices. It facilitates operational interactions between Indian Navy and JMSDF to foster cooperation and reaffirm their shared commitment toward regional maritime security, per an Indian Navy spokesperson.
