The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, engulfed the offshore platform, leading to a distressing scene captured in a circulating video on social media. The platform, situated in Pemex’s Cantarell Field, was known for its remarkable productivity in the past.
Pemex disclosed that six individuals sustained injuries during the fire, but it remained uncertain whether the casualties reported included the injured individuals. The incident originated at the Nohoch-A platform and extended to a compression platform.
The fire had a significant impact on oil production, as acknowledged by Pemex in a later update on Friday. However, specific details regarding the extent of the disruption were not provided. Pemex technicians are assessing the necessary repairs for pipelines, interconnections, and other infrastructure to begin restoration.
Octavio Romero, CEO of Pemex, addressed the situation, emphasizing the priority of finding the missing individual and expressing intentions to resume operations due to the area’s importance.
According to Pemex, out of the 328 individuals employed on the platform, an evacuation was successfully carried out for 321 individuals. Cantarell Field has experienced a decline in crude oil production but still contributes around 170,000 daily barrels.
It is worth noting that most of Mexico’s oil production is concentrated in the shallow water fields near the Bay of Campeche, where Pemex operates. Unfortunately, the company has faced a series of industrial accidents in recent years.
