Tragically, the blaze killed two New Jersey firefighters and injured five others. The Coast Guard reported that marine firefighting specialists actively suppressed the fire both on the pier side and on the waters.
The fire has been successfully contained on the 11th deck of the vessel and is no longer spreading to other areas.
The fire initially broke out on the 10th deck of the Italian-flagged cargo ship Grande Costa d’Avorio. It quickly spread to the 11th and 12th decks, originating from approximately five to seven cars.
One firefighter became trapped inside, leading to an urgent distress call, and a second distress call was issued for another firefighter.
Regrettably, firefighter Augusto “Augie” Acabou, with over nine years of service, succumbed to his injuries after being rescued. Wayne “Bear” Brooks Jr., a dedicated firefighter with over 16 years of experience, also tragically passed away.
Five additional firefighters suffered injuries, including steam burns caused by water accumulation on the ship’s floor and conditions such as heat exhaustion, smoke inhalation, and respiratory distress.
All three Newark fire captains have been discharged from the hospital, and the burn victim is in stable condition recovering at home.
Efforts are underway to stabilize the vessel further by pumping out water to reduce any tilt or list. Officials confirmed no visible signs of oil sheen in the water, and air quality monitoring is ongoing. The fire’s reason is still unknown and will require further investigation.
The cargo ship typically operates between the United States and West Africa, carrying over 1,200 vehicles and 157 containers.
Notably, there were no electric cars or hazardous cargo on board. Container activity has been minimally impacted, with approximately 99.5% remaining unaffected. Other vessels, mostly car carriers, are currently at anchor, awaiting clearance to transport their cargo once the situation is resolved.
