In response to a medical emergency, the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard collaborated to conduct a successful Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation early Saturday morning. Prompted by a request from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai, the process aimed to rescue a critically ill Filipino citizen on board the MV Saipem Endeavour, who urgently required evacuation due to acute appendicitis.
Situated approximately 55 nautical miles southwest of INS Shikra, the ship was being towed amidst challenging weather conditions, including low visibility and a low cloud base. However, undeterred by the obstacles, the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard deployed a Seaking helicopter from INS Shikra and ICGS Samrat, showcasing their exceptional cooperation and interoperability.
At 0900 hours, amidst extreme rolling and turbulent conditions, the Seaking helicopter skillfully landed on the vessel, defying the odds. The medical team on board efficiently transferred the critically ill patient onto the helicopter, ensuring their safety and immediate medical attention.
With the patient secured on board, the aircraft safely returned to INS Shikra at approximately 1000 hours. Medical professionals at INS Shikra promptly attended to the individual before being transferred to the specialized care facilities at INHS Asvini in Colaba for further treatment.
The success of this MEDEVAC operation highlights the seamless coordination and effectiveness between the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, both at sea and within shore-based operations centres. Despite the challenging weather and demanding circumstances, the joint effort of these maritime organizations exemplified their unwavering commitment to saving lives.
This operation is a testament to the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard’s exceptional capabilities in responding to medical emergencies. Their ability to swiftly deploy deployable assets and their strong collaboration ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in need, even in the most challenging situations.
The successful MEDEVAC operation not only saved the life of a critically ill Filipino citizen but also underscored the unwavering dedication of the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard to humanitarian missions at sea.
