In response to Iran’s recent attempts to capture commercial ships in the Middle East, the US is taking decisive measures to enhance regional security. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has approved the deployment of additional forces to the Gulf area, as reported by US officials.
The deployment includes the powerful USS Bataan amphibious readiness group, accompanied by two other ships as part of the group. Around 2,500 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit will join the deployment.
As stated by US Central Command, the main objective of this move is to provide greater flexibility and maritime capability in the region. By reinforcing the naval strength and introducing a significant Marine unit, the US aims to respond effectively to any potential threats to commercial ships and maintain stability in the area.
The amphibious readiness group, comprising three warships, departed from Norfolk, Virginia, earlier in the month, with their final destinations yet to be determined based on ongoing assessments of the situation and security needs.
The US has already deployed the USS Bataan amphibious readiness group and the USS Thomas Hudner destroyer to the Middle East to bolster security further. In addition, additional F-35 and F-16 fighter jets have been deployed, working alongside the A-10 attack aircraft already in the region.
Deploying fighter aircraft is crucial to providing air cover for commercial ships and deterring Iran from further actions. General Erik Kurilla, leading Central Command, highlighted that these additional forces, in collaboration with partner nations, aim to ensure uninterrupted international commerce and uphold the rules-based international order while deterring destabilizing activities by Iran in the region.
With this robust reinforcement of security and military presence, the United States seeks to protect the safety of commercial shipping, preserve regional stability, and assert its commitment to upholding international norms and maritime freedom in the Middle East.
