Data indicated that nearly 30 ships stopped near Ukraine’s vital Izmail port terminal following Russia’s destruction of grain warehouses on the Danube River on Monday. However, the specific reason for their stoppage remains unclear.
On Monday, in the early hours before dawn, Russian air strikes caused injuries to seven individuals and inflicted damage to infrastructure along the Danube River. The Danube had become a crucial alternative route for Ukrainian grain exports following the termination of a year-old agreement that allowed safe exports via the Black Sea.
Kyiv authorities asserted that the attack represented an escalation of Russia’s air campaign, which commenced after they withdrew from the grain deal.
Reports utilizing ship tracking data from analytics companies have calculated that approximately 29 vessels, including chemical tankers, halved around the Izmail area. According to the data, three additional ships had dropped anchor along the waterway leading to the Reni-Odesa terminal.
Insurance industry sources have disclosed that war risk cover for Ukraine’s ports, included in the previous grain deal, has been suspended. Furthermore, on Monday, three separate sources indicated that particular insurance providers were reassessing whether to maintain coverage for Danube ports. The situation reflects the region’s heightened risks and uncertainties due to the ongoing conflict and disruptions caused by Russian actions.
