Saudi Arabia reportedly welcomed the start of the UN’s operational plan of salvaging the FSO Safer oil tanker and pumping out about 1.14 million crude oil barrels on Wednesday.
Further good progress has been made by the colleagues of SMIT Salvage to prepare the FSO Safer for the oil transfer phase. Recent work focused on inspecting and reinstating equipment on board the FSO Safer and the underwater inspection of the hull. Go to https://t.co/uDn8Wk2Lgo pic.twitter.com/ki4VGyptf3

The Kingdom welcomed via a Foreign Ministry statement the success of international efforts and the UN over the past years that culminated in the start of unloading and averting an ecological disaster that risks maritime security, safety, and the global economy in and around the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia also commended Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General’s, efforts and the team that worked to harness endeavors to end the decaying vessel problem.
It praised the financial aid extended by donor nations to end the Safer’s ongoing crisis, as the Kingdom was one of the first nations that offered financial grants via the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.
The ministry also expressed the Kingdom’s thankfulness to the command of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy based in Yemen for its support in facilitating the arrival of the replacement vessel to start unloading. It further affirmed its continued efforts to work with the UN and Yemen’s government to end issues related to the rusty vessel.
