Indian Navy Ends Practice Of Carrying Batons With Immediate Effect

The Indian Navy declared on Saturday that it would be ending carrying batons with “immediate effect.” The plan is that a ceremonial baton will be placed in the office of the head of the organization of each unit — to be handed within the office as part of a change of command. The move aligns with the government’s efforts to shed the country’s colonial legacy.

With time, naval personnel carrying batons has become the norm. The significance of authority or the power pot heated via baton holding has long been a colonial legacy that is very out of place in an evolved navy of Amrit Kaal, per an official communiqué published by the country’s navy. The carrying of batons by personnel, including those from the provost, is discontinued immediately, the letter mentioned.

India’s Defence forces have also taken several steps to shed the legacies of the colonial era, and the Indian Navy altered the insignia.

PM Modi revealed the new Navy flag in 2022 while commissioning India’s first-ever indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. As the PM placed it in the event, the country’s naval flags had so far shown a sign of slavery. Chhatrapati Shivaji’s seal inspires this ensign.

The White Ensign, identified nationwide with the country’s navy, now comprises two primary constituents — the National Flag that can be seen in the upper-left canton and a beautiful Navy Blue and Gold octagon at the fly side center.

The Octagon boasts twin golden octagonal borders encompassing the golden National Emblem resting on top of the anchor and superimposed on a shield. Below the shield, within the octagon, on a Navy Blue background, in a golden bordered ribbon, is inscribed the motto of the Indian Navy.

The design encompassed in the octagon has been derived from the Indian Naval crest, where the fouled anchor, associated with the country’s colonial legacy, has already been replaced with an extremely clear anchor that underscores the steadfastness of India’s Navy, mentioned a PIB press note from 2022 (September).
