Burning Ship With Thousands Of Cars Towed To New Position To Avoid Ecological Disaster

A cargo ship loaded with electric cars went ablaze off the Dutch coast. It has now been towed to a temporary position, per authorities on Monday. Relevant sources are racing to stop an ecological disaster.

The 66-kilometre operation to shift the Fremantle Highway ship started on Sunday. It went well without any glitches, Rijkswaterstaat, the executive agency associated with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, informed. The cause behind the fire that broke out last Tuesday remains unclear, even though the owner stated that one of the electric vehicles could be the source.

A sailor lost his life after he and 22 others were reportedly rescued from the burning vessel that had compelled some crew members to jump overboard.

Most of the individuals have since been released from the hospital. The cargo ship is now about 16 km north of Ameland and the islands of Schiermonnikoog. Still, issues remain regarding the effect of pollutants on the waters and a close archipelago of environmentally sensitive islands in the Wadden Sea.

The authorities explained that its new position is far better suited for different scenarios and weather conditions expected, with the Dutch broadcaster NOS adding that the ship is now out of the busy and crucial shipping lanes. A vessel specialized in responding to potential oil spills has been stationed nearby, and relevant authorities hope it will help inspect the cargo vessel soon. It had nearly 500 electric vehicles on board when it caught fire.
