Iran Boosts Its Navy With Drones And Missiles As US Guards Ships In Gulf Region

Iran has reportedly equipped the Revolutionary Guards’ navy with powerful drones and 1,000-km range missiles, Iran’s news agencies informed on Saturday, as the US proposed to place guards on commercial vessels sailing via the Strait of Hormuz. Regarding the potential presence of the US guards, Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, Iran’s armed forces spokesperson, said the countries of the region are capable of making sure there’s security in the Persian Gulf by them.

He further questioned what the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, and the Gulf of Oman have to do with America. State news agency named IRNA mentioned that the Revolutionary Guards’ weapons include different kinds of drones and several hundred cruises and ballistic missiles that boast a range of 300–1,000 km among the systems and the equipment that was most recently added to the Guards’ navy capabilities.

Earlier in the week, Washington declared it could soon offer to place armed marines and sailors on commercial ships in the region following Iran’s harassment and seizure of vessels. Last month, it mentioned that it would send additional F-16 and F-35 fighter jets alongside a warship to the Middle East to monitor the waterways about a fifth of the crude oil in the world sails via the Strait of Hormuz between Oman and Iran.

Tehran says detained vessels have been part of shipping violations. Some were released after foreign nations freed the detained Iranian vessels. On Saturday, Alireza Tangsiri, the Revolutionary Guards’ Navy Commander, told the state TV that the new missiles had improved precision and a more extended range. Cruise missiles are capable of attacking many targets at the same time. Besides, the commands can also be altered after a take-off, Tangsiri mentioned.
