US Navy To Commission Combat Ship USS Augusta In Eastport, Maine

A new Navy vessel honouring Maine’s capital city will be commissioned in Eastport on 30 September.

Chief Justice Leigh Saufley, the Former Maine Supreme Court, who is now the President and the Dean of the University of the Maine School of Law, will sponsor the prestigious ceremony, giving the order to bring the vessel to life.

The USS Augusta is a littoral combat independence-variant vessel. The Navy says the LCS is typically a fast, agile, and highly mission-focused platform that can operate exceptionally well in near-shore environments, successfully winning against coastal threats of the 21st century.

These surface warfare combatants boast unique mine warfare capabilities that integrate with combined, unmanned, and manned teams to support forward presence, sea control, maritime security, and global deterrence missions.

The selection of Augusta as the vessel’s namesake recognizes Maine’s maritime landscape and rich history.

Following USS Augusta’s commissioning, it is expected to head to the homeport in San Diego.

The USS Augusta (LCS 34) is the second vessel to be titled after the US’ easternmost state capital.
