The U.S. Navy will christen the first vessel in the new Navajo Class of ships, USNS Navajo, named to honour outstanding Native American contributions to the country’s armed forces.
It is a salvage, towing, and rescue vessel and will be officially put into service in Louisiana at a ceremony held on Saturday.
Ten vessels will make up the Navajo Class, while the others will be named for the Muscogee Creek, Cherokee, and other Indigenous nations.
In 2019, V. Spencer, the then-Secretary of the Navy Richard, declared the new ship class and said that Native Americans have fought with courage in almost every major conflict since the nation’s founding.
John McCain, the late Arizona Senator, was an early advocate for building the Navajo Class.
