U.S Navy Warships To Stay In Persian Gulf As Long As Needed To Counter Iran, Says Pentagon

US forces sent to the Persian Gulf at the start of the month in response to Iran’s harassment of vessels in the region are going to stay for as long as required, Sabrina Singh, the deputy Pentagon press secretary, informed the reporters on Tuesday.

Singh added that the future cannot be predicted. So, as long as there is a need for the forces to be in the region, they will stay there. They are there to deter threats and/or unprofessional and/or unsafe behaviour from IRGC-backed groups.

Singh further mentioned that the US continues experiencing Iran’s harassment in the Gulf.

In the past few weeks, they have witnessed harassment from IRGC-backed groups over commercial vessels. And that’s why they have moved their forces into the region as we did. They have not encountered a threat drop, so there is also no reason to move the forces out. So until there’s a change, she will just leave it at that.

Defense Department assigns additional forces to counter Iran

Around July 2023, the Secretary of Defense ordered to deploy the Amphibious Readiness Group/Marine Expeditionary Unit (abbreviated the ARG/MEU), the destroyer dubbed the USS Thomas Hudner, as well as F16 and F-35 fighters into the Middle East as a response to the attempts by Iran to detain commercial vessels in the region.

The declaration came after Iran’s Navy tried seizing two merchant vessels in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz in a day.
