Cape Town firefighters set off to save a cargo vessel on fire at sea.
One 54000-ton container vessel caught alight while it was out at sea and was directed into the waters of Cape Town.
The fire was ablaze in the hull, so the ship captain sealed the compartment and, on 19 September, took the vessel to the Cape Town Harbour.
However, the vessel could not dock and had to be anchored in the bay as the fire was not in control, per Alderman JP Smith.
A 10-member crew from the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Department assembled and ferried out to the vessel.
The firefighters could successfully pump water into the impacted area before sealing it off again as the water turned toward the steam.
As soon as it had been confirmed that the internal temperature on the ship had dropped significantly, the vessel could finally dock.
One of the firefighters experienced massive smoke inhalation during this mission but is stable and continuing to receive medical aid.
