The U.S Navy will commission the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship, USS Augusta (LCS 34), in a ceremony on Saturday, September 30, in Eastport, Maine.
The sponsor of USS Augusta is Leigh Saufley, the President and Dean of the University of Maine School of Law.
Augusta is the 17th Independent Littoral Combat Ship. She is also the 2nd navy warship named after the city of Augusta, Maine, recognising its importance in the nation’s maritime history. Its coastline houses fishermen and a flourishing maritime industry that has contributed immensely to the nation.
She will continue the legacy of USS Augusta, also called SSN 7100, a submarine of the Los Angeles class that remained in service for 24 years and was decommissioned in 2009.
The LCS Class has 2 variants: Freedom and Independence. Lockheed Martin leads the Freedom variant team, while Austal USA leads the Independence Variant team.
Littoral Combat Ships are fast and mission-tailored vessels operating in near-shore and open ocean, involved in deterrence missions and ensuring maritime security.
