In the early hours of Wednesday, a huge cargo vessel ran aground close to the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Coast Guard reported that it had been abandoned by 12 individuals.
Considering that the vessel was carrying about 13,000 gallons of fuel and 250 gallons of lubricant oil, the government is looking into whether the incident resulted in contamination. Six automobiles, a truck, a trailer, two pallets of freight, and other items were also being transported by the vessel, Bonnie G.
Before morning, the engine room of the 195-foot vessel started to take in water, and the crew members radioed for aid. The Coast Guard said that they used two life rafts and a lifeboat to help abandon the ship.
The incident unfolded close to St. Thomas as Tropical Storm Philippe ended up into a lot of rain and churned up the water.
