U.S Navy Commissions First Flight III Destroyer USS Jack H Lucas In Tampa, Florida

Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125) was commissioned into service for the US Navy in a ceremony attended by thousands of people on Saturday at the Port of Tampa.

The commissioning of the Jack H. Lucas indicates that the Navy continues to deliver agile, fast, and networked surface combatants to the US Navy.

The Jack H. Lucas has been built for fight. It is a manoeuvrable, fast, lethal, and versatile vessel capable of handling missions it is given, said Erik Raven, the under-secretary associated with the Navy, at the vessel’s commissioning in Tampa.

It will help keep the Marine Corps and the Navy adaptive and ready and uphold the commitment to maintaining commerce, deterring unprecedented military aggression, and enabling fast responses to any kind of natural disaster globally, per Raven.

The 511-foot vessel is named after Jack H. Lucas, Private First Class, who reportedly served in the U.S. Marines for WWII, securing the Medal of Honor for unforgettable heroism at Iwo Jima.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was 14; when he was 17, he was already at Iwo Jima. He dove on two Grenades and pulled them under him to save the lives of the Koreans right by him, Lt. Dan McCormack reported to FOX 13.

According to a news release from the Department of Defense, Lucas was the youngest Marine and serviceman in WWII to be awarded the United States’ highest military honour for valour.

The ship will proceed to the navy facility in San Diego, California, where it will undergo training before being allocated for deployment.
