HD Hyundai Participates In Korea’s Largest CCS Project

HD Hyundai is accelerating its efforts to become carbon neutral by participating in Korea’s largest CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) project.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, a shipbuilding division affiliate of HD Hyundai, recently signed a preliminary basic design contract with Hyundai Engineering & Construction for a carbon dioxide (CO2) subsea underground storage platform.

This is part of the ‘Donghae Gas Field Utilization CCS Project’ that Korea National Oil Corporation and Hyundai Engineering & Construction are promoting to achieve the National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target (NDC). 1.2 million tons of CO2 emitted annually from domestic industrial complexes is captured and distributed to the East Sea Gas Field. In this project, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is responsible for the design of the offshore platform, and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering develops the CO2 injection system.

The Donghae Gas Field is Korea’s first gas field for which HD Hyundai Heavy Industries manufactured a production platform in 2004, and is a significant site that has put Korea in the ranks of oil-producing countries. The Donghae Gas Field, which ceased operation in 2021, will be reborn as Korea’s largest CO2 storage site through this project.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries jointly developed the ‘Korean-style marine CO2 injection platform’ with Korea National Oil Corporation in 2021 and obtained basic design certification (AIP) from Norwegian DNV Shipping and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), respectively. In addition, we are recognized for our expertise in the marine CCS field by participating in the ‘Development of a mid-scale CCS integrated demonstration model using the East Sea gas field’, a multi-ministerial national project starting in 2021.

In addition, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries acquired AIP from ABS for the 2MTPA class (2 million tons per year) floating CO2 subsea underground storage offshore platform model on the 12th (Thursday), thereby expanding their presence in overseas CCS markets such as Australia and Southeast Asia. We are also accelerating our strategy.
