1 Dead, 4 Missing After British Cargo Ship Verity Sinks In North Sea After Deadly Collision

One body has been recovered, two have been rescued, and four have been missing after two freighters collided in the North Sea off Germany’s coast, the maritime emergency authority reported on Tuesday.

The Verity, which the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies stated had reportedly sunk, was on its way to the English town of Immingham from Bremen with about seven crew members on it. The Polesie was sailing to Spain’s La Coruna from Hamburg.

The four missing crew members could well be alive and sheltering within the vessel on the sea floor, a spokesperson mentioned at a press conference later on, adding that a team of expert divers was looking out for signs of life.

The vessel, Verity, was loaded with steel and had nearly 1,300 cubic meters of diesel on the vessel, the spokesperson specified.

The ship eventually collided with the Polesie at about 0300 (local time), about 12 nm to the southwest of the Heligoland archipelago in Germany.

The Polesie had 22 individuals on the ship; none of them were injured, the central command mentioned.

One rescued man was rushed to a hospital on land while the other was on his way to hospital on the German maritime rescue cruiser dubbed the Hermann Marwede, it added.

A cruise vessel that the P&O Cruises operated was reportedly involved in the search mission, a spokesperson for the firm mentioned.

Authorities also reported very strong winds in the zone and waves up to about three metres.
