An incident was reported on October 8, in which a gas pipeline connecting Finland and Estonia was damaged in the Baltic Sea.
The investigation was carried out by Estonia on the Chinese-owned vessel. NewNew Polar Bear, a Chinese-owned ship, is the prime suspect in the investigation, carried forward from both Helsinki and Tallinn.
Estonia wants to find out if the damage to the telecom cables was caused by the vessel on purpose or by accident.
According to Marine Traffic data, two ships, Russia-flagged Sevmorput and NewNew Polar Bear, were reportedly present at all three locations at the time of the damage.
In order to communicate with the ship’s owners and crew, Estonia is looking to China for assistance.
Citing typical vessel operations and unfavourable sea conditions at the time, China has demanded an impartial, equitable, and professional investigation into the gas pipeline damage.
The general prosecutor’s office in Estonia stated that the investigation into the damage to the Estonia-Finland cable is shifting its focus to the same vessel.
He said, “The investigation’s ongoing goal is to determine whether the vessel intentionally damaged the communications cables or not, as well as whether the damage was an accident.”
