Cyprus is working with its Middle Eastern and European partners to create a maritime corridor that will help send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
If the proposal is permitted, this initiative seeks to deliver crucial supplies via Cyprus’ main port, Limassol.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides put forth this idea.
The need for humanitarian aid has significantly increased in Gaza due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. And this proposal is to stand by those in need with all the requirements in this challenging situation.
Several EU members, including Ireland, Spain, France, and the Netherlands, favour this proposal.
Arab nations like Jordan, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, and Oman supported this great initiative as well.
Ensuring the aid is devoid of any material that Hamas could exploit for military purposes is of utmost importance to Israel.
Furthermore, to maintain maximum security, Israel has asked for containers to be inspected before they are removed from Limassol.
Cyprus is in constant contact with the Palestinian authorities to find out their urgent needs for assistance.
There are still concerns regarding administrative tasks, such as which international organisations will distribute aid in Gaza and where relief ships should dock.
It is also necessary to address the issue of whether supplies will be transported by commercial or naval vessels as soon as possible.
