Wartsila’s Ultra-Low Emission Ship Engine To Reduce Methane Emissions By 41%

Wärtsilä, a leading technology company, has released an advanced, ultra-low emissions version of its highly efficient Wärtsilä 31DF engine.

This new engine is a significant advancement in the search for greener maritime technology because it provides a notable reduction in methane emissions.

The new Wärtsilä 31DF engine can reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) by up to 86% and methane by up to 56%.

Compared to the standard Wärtsilä 31DF engine, which already has one of the lowest emission levels in the market, it achieves an average 41% greater reduction in methane emissions.

One of the four engines of the Finnish-Swedish ferry company Wasaline’s Aurora Botnia has been equipped with this state-of-the-art technology.

As a result, the methane emissions from the ferry have already decreased by 10%.

Wärtsilä carried out this project as a component of the EU-funded Green Ray and SeaTech projects.

A study conducted in December 2022 by VTT, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, independently confirmed the project’s effectiveness.

Inspired by the favourable results, Wärtsilä has released the Wärtsilä 31DF engine’s ultra-low emissions version for commercial use.

An important step has been taken in the industry’s quest for decarbonisation with this engine innovation.

Wärtsilä and Wasaline have been working together for a long time to lower emissions on the Aurora Botnia ferry.

Methane leakage from engines may seem insignificant as a percentage, but it has a potency as a greenhouse gas that is up to 28 times greater than that of CO2.

Thus, lowering methane emissions is an essential tactic to reduce total engine greenhouse gas emissions.

This invention supports the larger objectives of decarbonising the marine sector by highlighting Wärtsilä’s dedication to improving efficiency and lowering emissions in its products.

This technology is essential to the long-term viability of LNG as a marine fuel and to the shift to cleaner shipping operations because it allows for a significant reduction in methane emissions.
