After accidentally dumping what is thought to be soot into the ocean, a massive cruise liner carrying hundreds of guests experienced delays in setting sail.
Carnival Magic was scheduled to depart from Grand Turk on the evening of Wednesday (1 November) when the tragedy occurred.
According to Cruise Radio, line handlers, crew members, and local authorities were spotted inspecting the discharge from numerous points.
Passenger Chuck Richards published images from the 3,690-capacity vessel on X, showing a black mass extending across the sea.
Richards later said the vessel had disembarked from the port close to 8.46 pm local time – over two hours after the scheduled departure.
James Robinson, yet another guest, said that the power had gone off a minute, telling Cruise Hive that it had come back on and everything was again normal. However, then there was a massive oil slick on the back of the vessel.
The officers who were on the pier were visibly upset.
Despite the late sailing, the rest of the itinerary would not likely be impacted.
It was over 100 miles away from the Grand Turk to the next stop — the Amber Cove based in Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic, with the vessel due on Thursday morning (per local time).
The Independent has contacted Carnival Cruise Line for more information and has approached the port in the Grand Turk.
Carnival Cruise Line is part of Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise firm in the world, and is also home to lines like P&O Cruises, Seabourn, Costa Cruises, and Cunard.
The cruise industry has been making repeated pledges to move toward a green model of operations, even though a new report in summer found out that the cruise vessels were reportedly responsible for over four times the sulphuric emissions into the European atmosphere than the continent’s car last year.
